🎾 WLTC - Lockdown 2, Return to Tennis Update! 🎾

Posted by Daryl McCartney on 29 November 2020

Dear Member,

I am delighted to confirm that our tennis club will reopen at 8 am on Wednesday 2nd December.

We are restricted by Government / LTA rules and guidelines which can be found here: https://www.lta.org.uk/globalassets/news/2020/local-restrictions-grid---tennis-activity-by-tier.pdf?category=Playing_Tennis_COVID19_Guidance

In short as an outdoor club we can resume nearly all tennis activities subject to (where no coach is involved) the rule of 6.

Whilst the club will seek to provide guidance to all members during these difficult times it is for the individual member to satisfy themselves that they are complying with the Government rules when travelling to and playing at the club.

The clubhouse will be open for use of the toilets, collection of equipment etc. but not for pre and post-play socialising.

Whilst writing could I also mention the following :

  1. Coaching. Our head coach (Patrick Gorman) is consulting with all current coaches and the return to a coaching plan will follow before Wednesday. Please direct any coaching queries directly to Patrick.
  2. Incredibly 2020 has seen the club's membership rise to its highest-ever total with 308 fully paid up members. The advised maximum capacity for our club is 350 members which membership should allow our continued (and envied) ability to turn up and play on most occasions. That said with the floodlights now in use and shorter playing days can I encourage all members to book a court wherever possible.
  3. A benefit of increased membership is the noticeably broader spectrum of tennis now seen at Woldingham allowing us all to enjoy very well attended club nights to see high-level tennis being played at all ages. We hope that as lockdown eases we can get the ladders and club sessions all backup and running as we would like to see.
  4. In fairness to all members where a court is booked play must commence within 10 minutes of booking or the booking is forfeited and any member seeking to play may enter the court and not have to give up play. To avoid such issues please make sure you cancel our booking if unable to play.
  5. Membership. In April this year, we had to close the club for Lockdown 1. That closure coincided with our annual fee renewal and I wrote to all members to confirm that the committee had agreed that any member kind enough to renew their membership before the 15th April 2020 would not lose out financially. A great many members paid their full membership at that time (in the full knowledge they would be unable to play)  and their contribution enabled the club to continue to pay its bills, deal with maintenance and prepare for re-opening. The committee once again extends its thanks to those members. It is also of note that during that difficult time our new membership increased with local residents expressing a wish to support the club even though they had not been playing prior to lockdown – again the committee extends its thanks to these new members who we hope will stay with us as we emerge from 2020 a stronger club.
  6. In recognition of (4) above and of this latest lockdown, I am pleased to confirm that those members who were fully paid-up by the 15th April 2020 will receive an 11-week credit against next year’s fees and those who have renewed or joined since the 15th April 2020 will receive a 4-week credit against next year’s fees.

Please look out for Patrick's note on coaching but otherwise, the committee is delighted to see the return of tennis to Woldingham

Welcome back

Best

Malcolm Henke
Chairman
